Project Background

The KW Urban CAP Project is an initiative led by the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo, in partnership with two dozen other local organizations, to create a network of public Internet access sites throughout Kitchener-Waterloo. It's funded by the Government of Canada through Industry Canada's Urban Community Access Program.

As new technology is integrated into the day to day community life, people who don't have access to it will be at an even greater disadvantage, especially those who can't access the Internet. The KW Urban CAP Project will begin to address this by building a network of partners to host community-based Internet access sites and who will work together to develop a stronger social infrastructure that includes all community members.

We want to make sure that everyone, including members of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, can have access to computers and the Internet to many things, including:

We will also help to strengthen our community by:

The KW Urban CAP Project will encompass 31 sites - 20 open to the general public and 11 "semi-public" sites that serve clients of particular agencies. Target groups include Aboriginals youth, seniors, new Canadians, persons with disabilities, the unemployed and working poor, people with low literacy levels and individuals suffering from serious diseases.
