Tips for Using Web-Based E-mail
There is no email program available on the ConnectKW computer, so you will have to use a web-based email service. We will use Yahoo! as an example.
Email Basics
To begin this process, type www.yahoo.ca into the Address Bar or, from the ConnectKW Using the Internet page, select Yahoo! from the Check email pulldown menu. When the Yahoo home page appears, click on the Mail icon and you will see the mail logon screen.
Click on the Sign up now link and follow the instructions to make a new account.
Creating Mail
Click on the Compose button. When the Compose screen comes up, enter the email address of the recipient in the To: field. Enter a subject heading in the Subject: field. Type your message in the main box, then click Send to send the message.
Cc stands for "carbon copy." Anyone listed in the Cc: field of a message will receive a copy of that message when you send it
You may send the same mail message to more than one person at one time by adding additional e-mail addresses to the To and CC fields, separated by commas.
Attachments
You can send all types of files as attachments, including word processor or spreadsheet documents, audio files, image files, HTML files etc. Currently, you can send up to three attachments totaling 1.5 MB in any email message.
Click the Add/Delete Attachments link located below the Compose window.
1. A new window will pop up. Click the Browse button and select a file.
2. When you have selected a file, click the Attach Files button.
3. You will then see a file attachment confirmation. You can remove attachments by clicking on the small garbage can icon to the right of the filename.
4. Click on the Done button to attach the selected file(s) to your message
5. To add multiple attachments, repeat steps 2 and 3.
6. Once the files are attached, you can address, compose, and send the message as you normally would.
Virus Checking
Yahoo! Mail will automatically scan most file types you attach to an outgoing email. If Norton Antivirus has found no viruses, you will see the words "no threat detected" in the virus check box at the bottom of the Attachments window after your file has been attached.
Spell-Checking Mail
To check the text of your message for proper spelling, just click Spell Check, located above the To: field, on the Compose Mail screen.
Receiving Mail
Mail will be received in your inbox. To view it, click on the subject of the message. To reply to the author, click on the Reply button. The new message will already be addressed. Type your message and send.
Opening Attachments
To open an email attachment, click on the attached file name. This will launch a box which will allow you to scan the attachment with Norton Antivirus. It is highly recommended that you do this.
Address Book
If you receive a message via Yahoo! Mail, you can add the sender's address directly to your address book. First, open the message. Next, click the Add to Address Book link. The address will be automatically entered into your Yahoo! Address Book. While the address book is open you can and additional contact information about the sender.
Size of Mailboxes
Yahoo mail is limited to 6 megabytes of stored email and attachments. Microsoft Hotmail is limited to 2 megabytes. When you go over your e-mail quota, you risk not receiving new e-mails that people send you. So, to prevent mailboxes from filling up, they should be cleaned out regularly.
Junk Mail
Yahoo! Mail offers two ways to help you block unwanted messages. If you receive multiple messages from the same source and would like to block the sender, you can block messages from that sender by clicking on the Block Address link.
Spam
Spam is any message or posting, regardless of its content, that is sent to multiple recipients who have not specifically requested the mail. It can also be multiple postings of the same message to newsgroups or listservs. Sending spam using a ConnectKW computer is strictly forbidden.
