Focus on Homelessness in the United States

Our neighbours to the south also have a serious homelessness situation. Learn more about it in these recent articles:

No Place That's Home - Families with children represent the fastest-growing segment of the nation's homeless population. Then there are all the kids who are living in homes that are unsafe, too small, or cost so much that other necessities -- like food -- get short shrift. Caitlin Johnson reports on how housing instability hurts children, and on efforts to help.

Family-Friendly Housing - The housing provided by the New Economics for Women project in Los Angeles isn't just affordable?it's also modern, safe, and designed with the goal of improving the long-term economic prospects of the families that live there. Kathleen Barrows explains how, in this article from the March-April 2002 issue of the Children's Advocate, published by Action Alliance for Children.

Homelessness: Improving Program Coordination and Client Access to Programs - According to this General Accounting Office overview of homeless programs and people, about 15 percent of homeless clients are families with on average two children. Download the article here. (226 KB PDF)

Improving Housing for Working Families - Housing costs can break the household budget for a working family, and unstable or inadequate housing is frequently a significant barrier to employment. The Minnesota Family Investment Plan, the welfare-to-work program that demonstrated the strongest evidence of success, relied almost exclusively on providing housing assistance (primarily Section 8 vouchers). This Center on Budget and Policy Priorities policy brief offers recommendations for federal and state measures to improve housing policies and supports for working families.Download the article here. Highlight on Student Housing

As demand for places in universities rises, so does the demand for student housing. The Record has run a series of articles highlighting the housing situation at local campuses.

At Wilfrid Laurier University, many students are staying three to a room. There will be some relief when a new residence being built at Seagram Drive and Lester Street, opens next fall. Work began in late November and is expected to be finished by the end of August. The residence will house about 325 first-year students in single rooms, with each two sharing a private washroom. There will be a sink in each bedroom.

Since last year, the Univesity of Waterloo has been guaranteeing a residence room to any first-year student who wants one. It's been a challenge to fulfil that promise.

Over in Guelph, there are few housing headaches at the University of Guelph, where about 40 per cent of undergrads live on campus.
