SCPI Projects Unveiled
On April 19, local MPs Janko Peric and Karen Redman, on behalf of their colleagues Lynn Myers and Andrew Telegdi, announced $818,000 in project funding to address homelessness in Waterloo Region through the Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative (SCPI).
The SCPI funds will be used for a variety of purposes, including the construction of a 40-bed emergency shelter in Cambridge; upgrading kitchen facilities for the Ray of Hope program; creation of five new units of transitional housing for First Nations people; and enhancing outreach support for people with mental health issues.
"We are very pleased the federal government has realized the need for a homelessness initiative and recognized these organizations as groups working towards solutions for homelessness,” said Carine Nind, Working Group chair. "These dollars will enable organizations to better serve clients in the Waterloo region who are in need of these facilities and services."
The MPs acknowleged the efforts of the Working Group, the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and the SCPI Allocations Advisory Group to make these allocations possible. "The partnerships we have established are helping to ensure that those in need in the Waterloo region have greater access to much needed services and support," they said in a joint statement.
