The Affordable Housing Crisis Continues

Six months after the federal government and all ten provinces signed the Affordable Housing Framework Agreement in Quebec City, there isn’t much more affordable housing than there was before the signing, according to the National Housing and Homelessness Network. Only two provinces (British Columbia and Quebec) have signed agreements with the federal government; only Quebec has matched the federal dollars. Five provinces have cut spending on housing. Read the NHHN media release. The group also details how Ontario has not lived up to its commitments in Reality check: The truth about rental housing in Ontario! See also Where's the Housing?

Debunking Myths about Homelessness

Too often there is misinformation and stereotyping in the media about homelessness. Gloria DeSantis of the Cambridge Action on Homelessness Group challenges these myths in No one wants to be homeless, originally published in The Record.

The article concludes with this truth: "People who are homeless are members of our community. We encourage everyone in our communities to become better informed about homelessness. Then, let's all use our positive energy toward resolving many of these issues. Collectively we can have an impact."

Call for National Urban Strategy

A federal task force calls a national strategy for Canada's cities - including several recommendations for better housing and to combat homelessness. The report, Canada's Urban Strategy: A Vision for the 21st Century, recommends that the government:

In nearly every major urban region, the task force heard that the shortage of affordable housing is one of the biggest challenges affecting economic competitiveness and quality of life. Municipal governments and housing providers cannot meet the demand for affordable housing and emergency shelter. As more and more people migrate to cities, the pressure to find suitable accommodation has a ripple effect on society as a whole.
