Life in Communities Today

Feb 10 2014

We have spent an energizing day talking about what community means in today's face paced living and today's consuming of things and experiences. Do you choose communities you join by how big, far or demanding they are, or do you make the best of your neighbourhood and your work place you are tied to anyway? Are online communities superficial or an escape? If the good old days are never coming back, what is it we can do to keep nurturing deep and meaningful relationships?

Gathering What Community MeansSeeking Community team from the Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement will be publishing an updated report on 1 000 conversations, but for starters, Derek Alton told us about all the beautiful paradoxes that community make. We enjoy being in a familiar circles and wish to be open at the same time; we enjoy people similar to us but we know that difference brings growth; we use technology to be even more connected but we are spread thin and our relationships are superficial; we value our time more than ever but have to stop and think about the choices we make how to spend the precious time.

The day opened some stimulating conversations we all hope will go on. From individual sense of responsibility to saying Hi to people on the street, to starting conversations about weather and Olympics, to remembering things we last spoke about and making sure the conversation goes on. From opening doors to common experiences and different cultures, pizza nights with friends and neighbours, to repair shop drop-ins, to twitter conversations crossing borders of time and space. We were quite awake in the room, and we know that no matter how inert some people might look like going through their busy lives, everyone needs and seeks belonging. There are many ways we can reach out, and we have to try them all! Until next conversation.
